Photonuclear Physics Models, Simulations, and Experiments for Nuclear Nonproliferation

چکیده
This work illustrates a methodology based on photon interrogation and coincidence counting for determining the characteristics of fissile material. The feasibility of the proposed methods was demonstrated using the Monte Carlo-based MCNPX/MCNPPoliMi code system capable of simulating the full statistics of the neutron and photon field generated by the photon interrogation of fissile and non-fissile materials with highenergy photons. These simulations were compared to the prompt time-of-flight data taken at the Idaho Accelerator Center immediately following the photon interrogation of a depleted uranium target. The results agree very well with the measured data for interrogation with 15-MeV endpoint bremsstrahlung photons at two different detector separation distances.

Improved Intranuclear Cascade Models for the Codes CEM2k and LAQGSM
An improved version of the Cascade-Exciton Model (CEM) of nuclear reactions implemented in the codes CEM2k and the Los Alamos version of the Quark-Gluon String Model (LAQGSM) has been developed recently at LANL to describe reactions induced by particles and nuclei at energies up to hundreds of GeV/nucleon for a number of applications. We present several improvements to the intranuclear cascade ...
متن کاملStudy of Photonuclear Interaction of Muons in Rock with the MACRO Experiment
The inelastic muon-nucleus interaction was studied at accelerators, in the range of large Q transfer (Q ≥ 1GeV ) mainly to measure the nucleon structure functions (deep inelastic scattering experiments). However, the bulk of interactions are characterized by low Q (Q ≤ 0.1GeV ) and can be described with the exchange of a quasi-real photon between the muon and the nucleon and they are often refe...
متن کاملNeutron Fluence Estimates Inside the APS Storage Ring During Normal Operation
Introduction In an electron storage ring, neutrons are generated as a result of the electron beam interaction with high-Z materials, such as scrapers and collimators [1]. When the energy of the incident electron beam is sufficiently high, it can produce high-energy photons, which subsequently interact with a nucleus, resulting in the emission of nucleons. This interaction is known as a photonuc...

The Los Alamos version of the Quark-Gluon String Model implemented in the code LAQGSM03 was extended to describe photonuclear reactions at energies up to tens of GeV. We have incorporated 56 channels to consider γp elementary interactions during the cascade stage of reactions and 56 channels for γn interactions, in addition to absorption of photons on two-nucleon pairs, into LAQGSM03 and have t...
متن کاملA Systems Approach to Assessing Nonproliferation Strategies
Nuclear nonproliferation efforts traditionally have focused on controlling the supply of proliferation-relevant technology, material, and expertise. As barriers to diffusion of all three have been lowered, there is increased acknowledgement of the need to reduce demand for such weapons, and, in cases where efforts to prevent proliferation have failed, the need to develop effective international...
